Laurie Marshall and her husband, who are both deaf, live with their four hearing children. This presents a clear challenge in the daily lives of the Marshalls.

When Laurie enrolled in the 100 Families Initiative in Greene County, she noted many things she needed help with but the most immediate issue was a past due utility bill that landed her on the shut-off list. 100 Families Initiative advocates were able to help the client communicate with four different churches to get the bill resolved.

While communicating with the utility company, Laurie became aware of an extreme water leak in her home. Her 100 Families client advocate, Natalie, was able to connect Laurie with an individual who fixed the leak, and the utility company then added a $155 credit towards the client’s next bill.

Although the Marshalls do receive income through disability, Laurie’s husband is employed. The 100 Families Initiative wants to support his efforts to work and provide for his family; therefore, Natalie reached out to her connections to help repair their vehicle so that he would be better equipped to make it to work.

Communication remains a significant barrier for the Marshalls, and this is the main reason they were unable to fix the water leak that caused them to fall behind on their utility bill in the first place. 100 Families advocates are working hard to help the Marshalls communicate and connect with the various resources in their community, in order to empower them and strengthen their independence.

With the 100 Families Initiative of Greene County as a support system, there is no limit to the long term goals that may be realized for this family.
