Sebastian, Crawford, and Franklin counties recently came together to honor their communities’ contributions to the 100 Families Initiative at an Appreciation Event. The 100 Families Initiative is a collaboration of existing community resources for the purpose of moving families from crisis to stability and onto a career. The gathering featured inspiring stories of families whose lives have been transformed through the initiative, highlighting the program’s powerful impact.
The event spotlighted four remarkable journeys, including the story of Maggie, the very first participant in the 100 Families Initiative when it began in 2018.
Maggie, who immigrated to the United States from Bulgaria, carried a history of trauma and addiction that had left her in a seemingly hopeless situation. Thanks to the resources and unwavering support she received through Sebastian County's community partners, Maggie’s story became one of resilience and triumph. Today, she is three years clean and living a stable, fulfilling life.
In her speech, Maggie reflected on her transformation, saying:
"I used to be recognized as a liar, an 'I won’t amount to nothing,' a bad mom, a junkie, a bad wife, a thief. But today, I can say that I am a great mom, a supervisor at a great job, I have great friends, I have a good credit score, and I’m a high school graduate."
Karen Phillips, who began working on Maggie’s case six years ago, praised Maggie’s determination and reminded attendees of the potential for transformation, even in the most challenging cases. Addressing the room filled with community leaders, Phillips urged them to envision their "hardest case" standing on that stage one day, sharing their success story.
"I want you to believe it is possible," Phillips said. "I believe it is possible."
Two of the initiative's core principles are grit and collaboration. Maggie’s success story exemplifies these values, showing how community members, through persistence and partnership, can make a profound difference in people’s lives.
Throughout the event, speakers invited individuals and organizations who had played a role in these transformations to stand, illustrating the breadth of support and resources involved. By the end of each story, the room was often filled with standing participants, a testament to the collective impact of the initiative.
The 100 Families Initiative continues to demonstrate the power of community, compassion, and commitment in helping families overcome obstacles and achieve lasting stability.
