I had the privilege of speaking at the Area 10 DCFS Friendsgiving/Training after being invited by Drew County Supervisor Veronica McGehee. I appreciated the chance to share more about the work we’re doing through 100 Families and Desired Haven, which is a part of the Arkansas Children and Families Ministry. It’s always meaningful to talk about how these programs support families here in Drew County, especially during times when they need stability, encouragement, and real hope.
I also sat on a panel with three amazing women who bring so much heart to the work they do every day: Cassandra Scott, Area 10 Director; Gwendalyn Hawkins, Adoption Supervisor; and Alether Wright, Health Service Worker. The adoption supervisor and health service worker provided Area 10 staff with important training information to help strengthen the work being done in the field every day.
Cassandra Scott closed out the meeting with a heartfelt message to the staff. She thanked them for the work they do—even when it gets tough—and encouraged them to keep pushing because what they do truly matters. She also spoke about how grateful she is for each person who shows up every day to support children and families.
And of course—it wouldn’t be Friendsgiving without food! Area 10 put together a full buffet of delicious dishes and desserts that everyone enjoyed. After we ate, things got lively with a fun (and very loud!) round of DCFS Jeopardy Trivia. Our host, Mrs. Trebek, also known as Supervisor Alonda Gordan, kept everyone laughing and shouting out answers. It was a great way to end the day on a fun note.
And not to brag… but the Orange Team—my team—won!!!
I may have left DCFS a few years ago, but clearly, I haven’t forgotten what I learned there. And honestly, I love that I still get to work alongside them and stay connected through my work as the Drew County 100 Families Coordinator.
Overall, the event was a wonderful reminder of what can happen when we all work together. DCFS staff, community partners, and ministries like Desired Haven all play an important part in helping families build stronger futures. I’m grateful for the invitation and thankful for everyone in Area 10 who continues to make a difference for families in Drew County.
