"When I was released from prison, I made an absolute commitment to break old cycles, confront every challenge head-on, and rebuild my life with honesty, stability, and purpose."
Jamie was unemployed, living in a difficult home environment, and determined to turn his life around. He connected with the Smart Justice program through El Dorado First Assembly of God and the 10:33 Initiative in Union County in July of 2026.
Setbacks and diagnoses do not define my future; they serve as proof of how far perseverance, faith, and the help of a caring community can carry someone.Jamie, 10:33 Initiative Participant
Finding employment was one of Jamie's biggest priorities. Without a steady income, securing housing and building an independent life would remain difficult.
Through the initiative, Jamie received help connecting with local employment opportunities, completing apartment applications, and accessing food assistance. Pastor Kevin Crowley of El Dorado First Assembly of God helped Jamie navigate these challenges while providing encouragement and consistent support.
"Without the support and mentorship from Pastor Kevin Crowley, I don’t know where I would be."
Jamie eventually secured employment as a sales associate at Blackman's Furniture, where he has found more than a paycheck.
"Having my own desk and official business cards has given me immense dignity, structure, and professional pride."
For Jamie, employment has become a foundation for independence. His job has helped him establish a routine, take responsibility for his finances, and move toward long-term stability.
It also opened the door to another major milestone: housing.
Through his relationship with his employer, Jamie was able to secure his own housing. Ken and Dolores Blackmon, who are also his landlords, provided him with the opportunity to establish a home of his own.
"At 29 years old, this marks the very first time I have had a home of my own since I was 19. Having a safe, stable environment has been essential to my ongoing recovery."
After years of instability, having his own space represents a significant step forward. Jamie now has a safe place to return to after work, room to build healthy routines, and the independence he has been working to achieve.
The 10:33 Initiative and El Dorado First Assembly of God have continued supporting his progress by helping provide food, household furnishings, and a bicycle for transportation.
Jamie has also remained committed to his recovery, mental health, and legal responsibilities, an achievement that he believes would not have been possible without his support system.
"My parole officer, Officer Ebony Beach, has helped me significantly throughout this process. Her continuous support, guidance, and active encouragement have played a major role in keeping me motivated and focused."
Through these relationships and his own determination, Jamie has made progress across multiple areas of his life, including employment, housing, finances, mental health, legal stability, and transportation.
He is also pursuing his passion for music as an independent hip-hop artist under the name Jay Aries, writing, producing, and releasing music inspired by his experiences.
While Jamie has achieved significant milestones, he knows there is still work ahead. His next goals include purchasing reliable transportation, continuing to furnish his home, building savings, and growing in his career and creative pursuits.
His story demonstrates what can happen when someone determined to make a change has a community willing to walk alongside them. Through the cross sector collaboration of the 10:33 Initiative, the community can work together to address the barriers that often stand between a person and lasting stability.
For Jamie, those partnerships have helped turn a second chance into real opportunities for independence.
"Setbacks and diagnoses do not define my future; they serve as proof of how far perseverance, faith, and the help of a caring community can carry someone. Thank you for believing in me, for investing in my second chance, and for walking alongside me on this road."
