When Deborah first heard about the Smart Justice District Court Initiative, it was through her former probation officer.
“She asked if I’d want to be a part,” Deborah recalled. “She made it sound harsh, and I was nervous at first. But I learned it was not bad at all.”
That initial hesitation quickly turned into determination. “I wanted to get into something I could finish and that would help me change my ways,” she said. “I wanted to learn different things. I was fully committed from the start.”
Throughout the initiative, Deborah’s commitment shined. She secured full-time employment, maintained her sobriety, and found more stable housing — milestones that gave her a stronger foundation to rebuild her life. She also shared how helpful it was to have her fines temporarily deferred, giving her the ability to get caught up financially and focus on personal growth.
“She was a star student,” her court coordinator noted, and it’s easy to see why. Deborah went beyond what was required. She voluntarily completed parenting classes, maintained outpatient treatment, and even paid off her car’s breathalyzer device ahead of schedule. After completing the program, she asked to keep meeting with the court coordinator for continued support.
“I loved it! I love the program and the people that worked with me,” she said. “It was really a learning experience that helped me accomplish my goals and keep me on the right railroad.”
The initiative also helped Deborah develop valuable coping skills she leaned on during one of the hardest times in her life — the loss of a family member.
“The coping skills I learned helped me handle it differently,” she shared, reflecting on her emotional growth and resilience.
Deborah’s journey wasn’t just about completing a list of tasks; it was about transforming her outlook. She began to see that she wasn’t alone in her struggles and that change was possible with the right mindset and support.
“There are people just like me going through the same things,” she said. “I learned not to get in trouble again and to make smarter choices.”
Now, with her fines paid off, certificates earned, and confidence restored, Deborah is focused on her next chapter. Her goals include getting involved with the Pope County Alliance and continuing to attend AA meetings to stay connected and accountable.
“I just want to keep going forward and doing positive things,” she said.
Her advice to anyone uncertain about engaging in the initiative is simple but powerful: “Go for it! Ain’t nothing wrong with doing something when you’re lost or confused. It won’t hurt.”
To the team that supported her along the way, Deborah’s message is heartfelt: “Keep up the good work! Make more programs for everyone.”
Deborah’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. Through the Smart Justice District Court Initiative, she hasn’t just achieved stability — she’s rediscovered confidence, community, and hope for the future.
