A Second Chance for Jason: A Reentry Story

When Jason was released from jail, he knew his future depended on the choices he made next.

He moved in with his mother, committed himself to Drug Court, stayed fully compliant with his probation officer and every court requirement, and was determined to find a job. But despite months of applying, opportunity never seemed to come.

"The hardest part was finding someone willing to give me a second chance. I spent months applying for jobs without success."

That's when Union County's Alliance stepped in.

Family Advocate Mallory Kornegay and Union County Coordinator Elesha Egger saw Jason's determination and refused to let him lose hope. They connected him with Goodwill Industries, where Lisa Fields helped him build a professional resume and apply for jobs. They also introduced him to additional employment opportunities and surrounded him with encouragement throughout the process.

"Mrs. Mallory and Mrs. Elesha believed in me, encouraged me, and never let me give up."

Jason was hired at Trotter Dodge, giving him the stable employment he had been working toward. He moved into his own apartment, advanced to Phase 3 of Drug Court, paid off all of his fines, obtained private health insurance, and recently celebrated one year of sobriety.

Areas that were once in crisis, including housing, employment, finances, health, and legal stability, have all moved to stable or thriving.

Perhaps most meaningful has been the progress in his relationship with his son. While his son's mother continues to have guardianship, Jason has regained visitation rights, allowing him to rebuild that important connection as he continues creating a healthier future.

Looking back, Jason recognizes how much those relationships changed the course of his life.

"I can honestly say I've made life-changing decisions and have been given opportunities I never thought were possible."

He credits both his faith and the people who walked alongside him through every step.

"I thank God for leading me to the 10:33 Initiative and for placing Mrs. Mallory and Mrs. Elesha in my path. Their encouragement, guidance, and belief in me helped me find my footing again. I truly don't believe I would be where I am today without their support."
