When Amanda Williams first heard about the Smart Justice District Court Initiative, it was through her public defender, who thought she might benefit from engagement in the initiative. At first, Amanda wasn’t sure what to expect.
“My initial thoughts were this could be challenging but also rewarding,” she recalled. Like many participants, her first motivation was practical.
“I realized I really had a support team behind me rooting for me, it was a huge turning point.”
That turning point became the start of a new chapter. Through the Smart Justice District Court Initiative, Amanda found more than just a pathway through the court system—she found a network of people who believed in her success.
“From the first visit with the court coordinator, I knew this wasn’t just a program to get me through court,” she said. “It was a system set up to support me for success and show me how to achieve it. Just knowing someone was there for me through my court journey was extremely motivating.”
Over time, Amanda’s confidence grew as she began achieving goals she once thought were out of reach. “Being part of the initiative has shown me that I can actually achieve my goals if I just apply myself,” she explained. “Just because it seems out of reach doesn’t mean it is. Hard work and dedication can get you very far.”
Amanda’s experience has also changed how she views her own potential. Her sights are now set firmly on the future. “A personal goal of mine is to be an assistant manager within six months and possibly a store manager within a year or two,” she shared. “The initiative taught me that the results are worth the effort. If I put my mind to it, I am more than capable of achieving more than I ever thought.”
She encourages others who are considering the initiative to take the leap. “Really give it a shot,” Amanda said. “It might seem like a lot of work—and sometimes it is—but improvement can be difficult. It’s worth it.”
Amanda also wants lawmakers to know the true impact of the Smart Justice District Court Initiative.
“This has given me the motivation and support I needed to get ahead where before I was stuck,” she said. “I didn’t know how to get out of the place I was in my life, and they helped me see that I am capable of fixing things.”
If she could speak directly to the court, Amanda would express her gratitude for helping her change her life. “The initiative has honestly helped me see the potential in myself and how to apply it to make my life better,” she said. “I never thought I would see the day I wouldn’t be scared to go to court—not because of anything the court did, but because I didn’t think I could do it. The Smart Justice District Court Initiative showed me that I can do it, and it’s worth the effort. I’m worth the effort.”
With determination, grace, and a newfound sense of purpose, Amanda Williams stands as a shining example of what’s possible when accountability meets opportunity. Her journey is a testament to what the Smart Justice District Court Initiative was designed to do—help people see their potential, find stability, and create a future they’re proud of.
