When Andrew first encountered Smart Justice Services inside the Johnson County District Court, he didn’t hesitate to recognize the opportunity in front of him.
“I thought it was a blessing of an opportunity,” he recalls. What could have felt like just another court requirement instead became the beginning of a meaningful transformation.
Andrew entered the program determined to prove something not just to the court, but to himself.
“I wanted to prove I wasn’t somebody who isn’t trying,” he explains. That determination deepened as he moved through the program. With guidance from the Smart Justice Services and 100 Families Initiative team, Andrew gained a renewed sense of purpose and accountability.
“It has improved my mindset and has proven to myself truly I could succeed,” he says. This shift in mindset became one of the most powerful outcomes of his participation, reinforcing his belief that change was possible.
Among the most valuable tools Andrew gained were the ability to think ahead and plan more effectively. These skills, while simple in concept, have had a profound impact on how he approaches daily decisions and long-term goals. The program equipped him with practical strategies for building a more stable future.
A defining moment for Andrew came when he realized the level of care and commitment behind the initiative. “When Nikki explained her mission in helping us grow,” he shares, it became clear that the program was about genuine investment in each participant’s success. That sense of support extended beyond staff to fellow participants, creating an environment where growth felt both encouraged and achievable.
Andrew acknowledges that the journey wasn’t always comfortable, but he now sees that discomfort as necessary.
“Sometimes it takes being uncomfortable to truly grow,” he says—advice he now offers to anyone considering the program but feeling uncertain. His message is simple but powerful: the effort you put in determines what you gain. “You won’t regret it unless you’re not trying.”
Looking ahead, Andrew has set clear and meaningful goals for himself. In the next six months, he plans to secure a home and purchase a newer vehicle. With renewed motivation and a stronger sense of direction, he is already taking steps to turn those goals into reality, including completing projects that will help him move forward financially and personally.
Andrew also hopes that leaders and lawmakers recognize the value of programs like Smart Justice Services.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity, and I’m sure it would definitely help others trying with no support,” he says. His experience stands as a testament to what can happen when accountability is paired with guidance, encouragement, and belief in a person’s potential.
As he completes the program, Andrew leaves carries a transformed mindset, practical life skills, and a renewed confidence in his future. His message to the court team is one of gratitude: “I’m very thankful for the help, and I hope I helped them as well.”
